FAQ'S

WHAT IS MUSIC LICENSING?

Music licensing is the act of obtaining rights for the use of a piece of music for a fee. Use can include adapting the songs- changing its tempo or adding effects and voice-overs. It can also include combining two different music tracks to make one new song requiring licenses from both rights holders. The fee for the licenses themselves are negotiated between the rights holder(s) and the music user.

WHAT MUSIC LICENSES ARE NEEDED?

Using and editing elements of an existing song for the creation of a new track requires permission to adapt the existing work. You require approval from both the master rightsholder and the publishers. The fee is negotiated between the copyright holder and the person who wants to use the song. Typically, the amount will depend on the popularity of the track, the duration of the track being used, how it is edited and other variants that will be decided upon between the two parties.

WE COVER THE RIGHT TO:

- Edit, adapt and combine music (both master and publishing)

- Copy the music onto a different format (the mechanical right)

- Perform the edited mix in a venue where a performing rights license is held

- Perform the edited mix with a choreographed routine/dramatic work.

- Sync the music to an online video of the routine

AN EXPLANATION OF THE LICENSES:

Sports Mixes: Allows the licensee to change the tempo, add sound effects, add or remove certain instruments and other changes that will ultimately alter the original recording for the new mix.

Online Sports Video: Allows the licensee to upload a recording of their sports mix on a media platform for public viewing (such as YouTube). The music can only be used in context with the routine. The license does not grant the use of the music for editorial, commercial or instructional videos.
